Hi. I started Saturday on Plaquenil after stopping mtx for GI issues. So far, it’s fine, but I think it takes a good deal of time to get into the system? So my question is, how have other people’s experience been with it? Does it take a while for any side effects to develop, or can I stop being paranoid? However, risk increases with duration of use, and the guidelines call for annual screening after five years, or sooner if there are “unusual risk factors or a suspicion of early toxicity.” Anne E. Fung, MD, a retina specialist at Pacific Eye Associates in San Francisco, averages one Plaquenil screening a week, due to her close affiliation. Jun 23, 2018 No that's not true, I was on plaquenil for the first two years after being diagnosed with lupus. Never had an allergic reaction however had issues with my eye sight. I have been on mycophenolate since 2009. And that is a medication for organs as well, I prey that this helps you in some manner.

I've always been one to go for the natural route and am starting to feel like I should just stop taking everything and see what happens - so frustrating. My doctor now wants me to start on Chloroquine instead of plaquenil.

  7. You are in a tough situation. If I understand your history correctly, you started having the alopecia despite being on the plaquenil 2 years ago. Now that you're off the plaquenil, there is more fatigue and joint aches. Plaquenil is very effective for the symptoms of achiness and fatigue. However, there might be a price to pay in terms of retinal toxicity especially after taking it for as long as you have.

Aug 29, 2014 Several risk factors may increase the likelihood of retinal toxicity from Plaquenil such as, age of greater than 60 years, daily dose more than 6.5 mg/kg; use of the drug more than 5 years, obesity, preexisting retinal disease and, renal or liver failure. I am interested to see if anyone here has gotten a rash from Plaquenil after being on it for several months. I have been getting these horrible rashes and they are not related to sun exposure.
