Plaquenil and prednisone for rheumatoid arthritis

These drugs are called disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), and they are an important part of an overall treatment plan. Disease-modifying drugs act on the immune system to slow the progression of rheumatoid arthritis. This is why they are called "disease-modifying." Many different drugs can be used as DMARDs in the treatment of RA, but some are used more often than others.

Dosage While in some cases, lower doses of NSAIDS are effective, in rheumatoid arthritis and other forms of inflammatory arthritis a higher dose is often required to decrease inflammation. A lower dosage can initially be used if inflammation is mild, if mechanical pain is the major problem. Plaquenil is the brand name of hydroxychloroquine, a drug used to prevent or treat malaria 2. Plaquenil is also used for long-term treatment of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis RA and systemic lupus erythmatosis. According to the Mayo Clinic, it can take up to six months' constant use before an effect is seen in RA 1. Mar 08, 2010 Medicines which fight the Rheumatoid Arthritis disease activity are called disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs DMARDs. Rheumatoid arthritis usually requires both disease treatment and symptom treatment. Lately, I’ve given a lot of thought to the prednisone Rheumatoid Arthritis issue. Like so many other RA issues, the prednisone one is huge.

They are not as powerful as other DMARDs, but they usually cause fewer side effects. Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) and sulfasalazine (Azulfidine) are used for mild rheumatoid arthritis.

Aug 22, 2008 Plaq is not a substitute for prednisone. Prednisone is an intermediate acting corticosteroid-which means it has direct anti-inflamitory properties that take effect begining in a few hours. It is ment to get this undercontrol now and diminish your pain. Plaq is a longer time medication it may take two months before their is a noticable difference. Prednisone is a bone killer as I’m paying the price 25 years later, but I was pretty pain free all those years! No hair loss and plaquenil has not affected my eyes other than dry eyes. Keep a diary of your meds. In December I was put on daily prednisone, but nothing else. In January when I had showed no improvement, my first doctor added naprosyn. In February, still no improvement, he added sulfasalazine – March, still in pain, went to a new rheumatologist & he added Plaquenil. All of my numbers were very, very high.

Post-exposure Chloroquine Prophylaxis COVID19 I don't know about you, but if my life were to be seriously disrupted by contact with a confirmed case, I would rather wait until I develop mild symptoms or not, and then be administered chloroquine in the hospital.
