The purpose of the blog is to help others live healthier, happier lives by sharing what has helped/ not helped in Carla's 20 years of having lupus (SLE). Humor has been one of the things that has consistently been helpful, and is incorporated fairly regularly into the posts.

Growing Back that Gorgeous Head of Hair. After seeing my rheumatologist, he wants to put me on Plaquenil, mostly because I complained of recent onset of thinning/loss of hair which is freaking me out. But then I read about Plaquenil and its side effects and really freaked out. Would appreciate any insight if you have it if you've ever been. Do not use Plaquenil without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding. Our blog on Lupus and Pregnancy has much more valuable information on this topic. Back to top. We hope that this blog has been helpful in answering some of your questions about Plaquenil and other antimalarial drugs used to treat lupus. Shalyserenee~ said. This post spoke pretty directly to me as I have both been on Plaquenil and have lost all my hair when I was originally diagnosed w Lupus 15 years ago and experienced some serious weight loss while on dialysis and thru the first few month after my kidney transplant alittle less than a year ago.

I’ve struggled with hair loss before (telogen effluvium) but it was put down to anemia and as long as I keep taking extra iron it’s ok. I do know that listing the weight loss is really ridiculous as most people / 70petcent say they GAIN! I’ve got some treatment from a Trichologist who has treated me before. Hi Amy G6500, I was on hydroxychloroquine for a couple of years and my hair was thickening, since coming off apart 9 months ago I have had significant loss, but not sure whether it’s down to that. (I have hair from the front but look bald from the back but then I am male and elderly - you need to find a way of covering the loss but Medicine will not be able to help at this point in time unless something very dramatic has snuck by me). As hair loss was a listed side effect of hydroxychloroquine I wanted to check. Does anyone know how likely it is for hydroxychloroquine to cause hair loss? Weight loss is also listed as a side effect, I am up 15 Linda 8 mo into this drug👀😤😃😁Everyone is different. I’m not ill enough to of interest to him generally! I couldn't 100 % say it is due to the mets though but my hair has gone thinner since I started taking the meds. However, Hydroxychloroquine slows down and mitigates lupus symptomatology so it will slow up hair loss. The only real side effect is on vision in those susceptible to that; annual testing for a couple of years is advisable and if that is OK you can forget visual deterioration more or less. Being on iron and B vitamins no matter what the blood tests say about levels has pretty much settled my hair down.

  3. After the first couple months I noticed that my hair was "shedding" a lot. When I brought the concern up to my rheumatologist he said that the hair loss was "probably" due to lupus itself & not the result of taking plaquenil! I found his response strange given the fact that I wasn't losing hair prior to taking plaquenil.

Mg a day is pretty high. 200mg is much more standard. Also I haven't heard of anyone having that degree of hairloss on plaquenil or really hair loss at all. Also out of most of the other drugs used to treat RA, plaquenil is probably the least likely option to cause hair loss. No I didnt have any hair loss, I do have thick hair. I had some hair loss before I started the Plaquenil but dont remember what drug I was on at the time.its just a short term problem, maybe the Dr. will give you something else. We have too much to deal with already and, a woman losing her hair, is a big deal. Its even a big deal for. Does anyone know how likely it is for hydroxychloroquine to cause hair loss? I’ve struggled with hair loss before telogen effluvium but it was put down to anemia and as long as I keep taking extra iron it’s ok. Actually I’m on B12 injections and my hair is the best it’s ever been. I’ve read conflicting reports on this.
