There have been reports which may indicate an increase in incidence and severity of adverse reactions when chloroquine is used with Fansidar sulfadoxine and pyrimethamine as compared to the use of Fansidar sulfadoxine and pyrimethamine alone. Both adults and children should take one dose of chloroquine per week starting at least 1 week before. traveling to the area where malaria transmission occurs. They should take one dose per week while there, and for 4 consecutive weeks after leaving. The weekly dosage for adults is 300mg base 500mg salt. For treatment of acute attacks of malaria in adults, one dose is usually taken right away, followed by half the dose 6 to 8 hours later and then half the dose once a day for the next 2 days. For prevention and treatment of malaria in infants and children, the amount of chloroquine phosphate is based on the child's weight.
